Clinical Psychology

Clinical Psychology involves the application of psychological theory and research to a variety of areas, which can include adult mental health, child development, adjustment to physical illness, and forensic settings.

Clinical Psychologists are involved in the assessment, formulation and treatment of the client's presenting problems. A psychological formulation is the application of psychological theory and research to explain the development and maintenance of the presenting problem, and forms the basis of the treatment chosen. Each stage of assessment, formulation and treatment is conducted collaboratively with the active involvement of the client.

The Clinical Psychologist is trained to select an appropriate, evidence-based treatment for the client's presenting problem, with the aim of altering behavioural and emotional functioning to aid adjustment or alleviate distress.
