Ergonomics

What is Ergonomics?

The word "ergonomics" was put together by the British scientist K.F.H. Murrell from the Greek ergon ("work") and nomos ("law"). It is the science of making the environment and its surrounding equipment fit people instead of asking people to fit the environment i.e. the work fits the worker.

However, with the demands of modern day life, this is not always achieved. Most people work lengthy hours at their desks in uncomfortable chairs using badly positioned equipment and by the end of the day are experiencing aches and pains in varying parts of their body due to poor posture. This is where Parks Therapy Centre can help.

What is an Ergonomic Assessment and of what does it consist?

It is a functional assessment which assesses individuals on site in their home or work environment. It aims to:-

  • Identify potential problem and/ or risk areas for the individual a prevention approach, or
  • Identify specific problem areas from a medical diagnosis of discomfort & dysfunction a management approach.

All assessments include observation of the individual working within their environment, a written report with comprehensive recommendations, posture education and information leaflets.

What are the benefits of an Ergonomic Assessment?

The benefits are:-

  • Increased knowledge on how to maintain good posture within your working environment
  • Education on the principles of correct seating and adaptive equipment
  • Confidence to adapt the work environment to suit your needs- maximising productivity by minimizing discomfort & fatigue
  • Ensuring you and your environment have a good working relationship
  • Taking proactive steps in preventing chronic health problems
  • Meeting requirements stipulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
