Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is the assessment and intervention of everyday activities, for example bathing, moving and handling, working, using the stairs and getting in and out of bed. All involvement is person centred and addresses someones physical, social and emotional needs.

The overall aim is to increase a persons independence, quality of life and safety. An Occupational Therapist will work with a person to design a programme of treatment based on the individual's unique lifestyle and preferences, sometimes modifying the environment surrounding the person. Enhancing someone's ability to participate in everyday activities is a central part of occupational therapy. An Occupational Therapist will visit the home or any environment where it is felt Occupational Therapy intervention is needed.

Examples of work undertaken include:

  • Assessment and advice regarding specialist daily living equipment to aid activities such as bathing, toileting, using the stairs, eating and drinking, getting in and out of bed and seating.
  • Manual handling assessments and recommendations including hoisting, sling assessments and other risk assessments.
  • Assessment and recommendations for environmental adaptations required in current accommodation or in preparation for transition into a new environment.
  • Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) a standardised Occupational Therapy tool which provides client specific information regarding level of skills and ability in completing activities of daily living.
  • Recommendations regarding care level requirements.
